Stories from Sion Mills
Anne Marie McAleese visits Sion Mills, the picturesque village on the River Mourne in Tyrone.聽 Established by the Herdman family in 1835 for the production of linen, Sion Mills is full of architectural heritage and has a designated conservative area.聽 And now, with a rejuvenated Stables building, designed to tell the story of this unique place -聽Project聽Manager Frances Flood joins Anne Marie on a walk around the village.聽
Lissan Farm, Tyrone
Anne Marie McAleese talks to John Robinson who runs Lissan Farm in Tyrone, just a few miles outside Omagh on the Ballynahatty Road - somewhere that's been badly hit by the weather recently, a lot of flooding in places, making it very difficult for low lying businesses and farmers.聽 John specialises in cereal production but the last few months have been the toughest he ever remembers.聽聽
The North Irish Horse
A small cavalry reserve regiment from County Antrim played a prominent part in both World Wars - the North Irish Horse were deployed to France and the Low Counties and fought with distinction, both as mounted troops and later as a Cyclist Regiment, achieving 18 battle honours.聽 They were reduced to a single man in the inter war years but raised again for World War II where they had their greatest distinctions, in North Africa and Italy.聽 Renowned military historian Richard Doherty joins Anne Marie McAleese, as the first ever Freedom of the Borough is to be conferred on the North Irish Horse squadron.
