Stories
Kinship Carers
For Mothering Sunday, Pam Rhodes meets two inspirational grandmothers who have become committed carers for their grandchildren.
Sixty one year old Sharon Peake still takes on a gruelling 7am to 5.30pm schedule looking after her two grandchildren, six year old Leon and Holly who is four while their parents work long hours.
Pam also talks to Enza and Dave Bradley, who have ended up raising their two grandchildren over the past 15 years because the children’s own mother couldn’t.Ìý
Pam learns how the couple’s faith has helped them to deal with the challenges of caring for 13 year old Chloe and 17 year old Bradley, who suffers from the hyperactive disorder ADHD but who, with his grandparents’ support, has developed into a promising county rugby union player.
Enza’s experience has led her to set up a charity, Kinship Carers UK, to give advice and help to other grandparents and carers in the similar situation.
Claudia Lawrence
Sally Magnusson meets the mother of Claudia Lawrence, who mysteriously disappeared from her York home nearly seven years ago, to discover how her faith has helped her hold out hope.
Claudia worked as a chef at the University of York and suddenly vanished in March 2009. Despite extensive investigations, which are ongoing, to date no one has been charged in connection with her disappearance.
Claudia’s mother, Joan Lawrence, recalls the last time she saw and spoke to her daughter and describes how her faith helps her with the agony of not knowing what happened to her daughter.
Grace Agbana
In Grace Agbana’s Church in Aberdeen there are 34 different nationalities worshiping every Sunday in three exuberant services.
Many of the churchgoers came to the city to work in the city’s booming economy which is driven by the oil industry.Ìý Grace came to Aberdeen from Nigeria in 2008 and after some difficult years of missing her home and family, set up her own hairdressing business.
Grace is one of the church’s worship leaders and describes how its members supported her and her husband when they faced a difficult struggle to start a family.
Now settled with her two young children and husband, Grace leads the praise band in her church and her passionate faith in God has inspired her to release an album of her own songs.
