Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:

Ìý

How’s everybody feeling after the Bank Holiday weekend?Ìý This may surprise you, but I believe as people return to work this morning, millions are in fact enjoying going back to work, even though they may be shy to admit it.

Some people appreciate their work not only as a means of earning a living but also as a way of connecting with other people. Some people enjoy the company of colleagues, others love being part of a profession or a trade union and many of us like to help those we serve. These human connections at work express our inborn desire to care for others. If we make our work a series of generous actions then we begin to discover how work can be vocational.

For example, when I worked as a head teacher, I was talking with a student about how he coped when he was having a bad day. To my surprise, he said he went and talked to Fred, one of the school cleaners. ‘Fred’s always happy, he said, so I go and talk to him. By the time we’ve finished chatting, I feel better.’ So I realised that Fred’s work as a cleaner was not only fulfilling a necessary task was also a means of caring for others. Fred was a vocational cleaner. A vocation is a call to fulfil a bigger purpose in life that begins with the innate human desire to love.

A sense of vocation in our work can give each day a sense of being special, even when we feel under the weather. I know many people who struggle into work when they’re ill because they don’t want to let down colleagues or disappoint the people they serve. And think of all the voluntary work that people do so willingly. Thank God for that inspiring sense of a bigger purpose which can make life so fulfilling. Have a great day at work everyone.ÌýÌý And here’s to all the Freds of this world!
