More about the programme:
One person in four experiences treatable mental illness at some time in their life: virtually every family in the country has been affected in some way. As Mental Health Awareness week draws to a close, Roy Jenkins explores whether religious faith can help or hinder those coping with mental health problems, and what faith communities can offer as a distinctive contribution.
Joining Roy are four guests:
Dr Simon Braybrook is a GP in Butetown, in Cardiff, and has particular interest in this area – he has depression himself, and with his wife has been running a small group on mental wellbeing through their church, Glenwood.
Dr Ahmed Darwish is a consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and chair of the Muslim Council of Wales.
From Gilfach, Bargoed in the Rhymney Valley, we welcome Olga John, whose twin brother lived for more than 40 years with schizophrenia. She’s now the main carer for her husband, who has depression.
And Ben Bano, director of ‘Welcome Me As I Am’, a not-for-profit company promoting mental health awareness especially in faith communities.
