Pause For Thought

From comedian & Writer Paul Kerensa:

In our house, we start our children鈥檚 musical education early. So in amongst Baa Baa Black Sheep鈥檚 wool, or Mary Mary鈥檚 garden growing 鈥 both highly educational songs for farming聽 my three - and five-year-old get a healthy dose of cultural classics. 70s disco is a particular favourite, and I promise no pretending because Nile Rodgers is here 鈥 but I鈥檝e genuinely played Chic to them so many times, that my 3 year old can鈥檛 hear me sympathise with an 鈥淎aaaaaah鈥, without adding: 鈥溾reak out!鈥

The children tolerate me, so the Manic Street Preachers and Texas will be next. Oh yes, they have class. But one of the quirks of our children being different ages, as most are, is that different ages mean different stages鈥 puzzling the world out a year or two apart. While our preschool-girl tests out statements like 鈥淲hen I鈥檓 a man, I鈥檒l have a tail like my bunny-rabbit鈥 (diagrams necessary), our schoolboy meanwhile is onto mortality: 鈥淲hy doesn鈥檛 daddy have a granny or granddad? Are there planes from heaven to Gatwick Airport? What do we say when God sneezes?鈥

I鈥檓 delighted they鈥檙e inquisitive, and I pray they don鈥檛 stop being so. They know at church each week I say 鈥淚 believe in God the Father鈥 Christ the Son鈥 the Holy Spirit.鈥 But to me, belief means acknowledging there seem to be more questions than answers 鈥 which there certainly are in our house. Only yesterday they were playing doctors with their soft toys. 鈥淥h no!鈥 said our youngest. 鈥淟ook at Mr Tiger鈥檚 bruise!鈥 鈥淵es!鈥 added my boy. 鈥淎nd I can see Mr Tiger鈥檚 blood! I think he鈥檚 dead!鈥 His younger sister looked stoney-faced, wondering if she should apply the bandage after all. As I saw that poor soft toy, I cried, 鈥淚t鈥檚 a miracle!鈥 He鈥檚 not just Mr Tiger who came to tea, he鈥檚 Mr Tiger who came back from the dead. We now call him Lazarus.

We don鈥檛 know all the answers, but we do what we can. So bring on the puzzling and the pondering. As the writer Elisabeth Elliot suggested, 鈥淔aith doesn鈥檛 eliminate questions; faith knows where to take them.鈥 As children, as adults, I pray they keep asking, and keep listening to the answers. To quote our musical guests: This is my truth, tell me yours鈥 and say what you want! I promise I won鈥檛 鈥渁aaaaaaaah鈥 freak out!鈥
