Chris鈥� Pause For Thought: Julia Neuberger

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

On Saturday night, the beginning of the Jewish festival of Shavuot, the celebration of the giving of the law, Torah, to Moses, we held a huge Iftar, Muslim fast-breaking, at my synagogue, and invited lots of Muslim friends to join us to break their Ramadan fast. Muslims, Jews, and some Christians all came together in what became an amazing interfaith party to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen鈥檚 90th birthday - the Big Royal Iftar. Our synagogue hall was decked out in Union Jacks, and full to overflowing with Jews, Muslims and Christians eating together, talking together, and, later, undertaking scriptural reasoning together. That鈥檚 where we take a section of our respective scriptures- in this case on revelation- get someone to explain it, and then discuss it with each other, respectfully, but with curiosity. Before that, we鈥檇 had a rabbi talk about Shavuot and the revelation, and an imam doing the same鈥︹�� and the assembled masses, some 350 of us, listened in silence, despite being crowded and in a party atmosphere. It was the perfect example of what an interfaith event should be- we drank Her Majesty鈥檚 health in non-alcoholic cocktails, to respect our Muslim friends, we talked about revelation, to pay tribute to our Jewish festival of Shavuot, and the masterpiece of the evening, an extraordinary Union Jack birthday cake, was made by a wonderful young Christian woman, Alex Cameron, cut by a Muslim, and served by people from all three faiths! The energy in the room was palpable. The willingness of people of all faiths to pray in our building was heart-warming, and everyone has asked us to do it again next year! Everything about it seems to me to demonstrate exactly how our diverse, pluralist society should work, and how we should be able to celebrate together. So I am left wondering whether this couldn鈥檛 be even bigger next year, with a big Iftar in religious buildings of all faiths- to show hospitality, of course, but also to learn how to sit and study together, and to have fun!
