Episode 4
Documentary series following couples locked in a cycle of overeating. Prof Tanya Byron and her team separate struggling couple Lisa and Steve in a bid to transform their lives.
Lisa is clinically obese at over 22 stone and Steve is suffering from type 2 diabetes, largely on account of all the cakes that Lisa bakes for him - her way of showing her love for her husband. Steve fears the couple will not grow old together, and Lisa has a more immediate sadness as her weight is preventing her from getting pregnant.
Clinical psychologist Tanya Bryon separates them for ten weeks in a bid to rid them of their self-destructive behaviour. She discovers that a miscarriage Lisa had ten years ago still haunts her and that a fear of failure is stopping her from losing weight. Meanwhile, Steve is confronted by Rick about his chaotic eating and high blood sugar and Tanya takes him back to his old school where he was asked to leave to get to the heart of his refusal to follow rules.
Will the couple change whilst they are apart so they can come back happier and healthier to start the family they both dream of having?
