The Verb on Lateness...

Ian McMillan presents Radio 3's cabaret of the word, examining lateness. Ian's guests are Andy Miller, Ira Lightman and Karen Leeder.

On tonight's Verb, the early Ian McMillan ( a man who is never knowingly late ) welcomes lovers of literary lateness into the Verb studio. He explores the power of the deadline for writers, the idea of lateness as a gambling addiction, the impact of a line delivered late on stage, the attraction German poets have felt towards the idea of lateness, and the pleasures and work of 'late' song - otherwise known as the lullaby.

Ira Lightman
Poet Ira Lightman is a regular guest on The Verb, and he is never late for our recordings, although he is sometimes nicknamed ‘Ira Lateman’ by others. Ira’s new collection is ‘Goose’ (Diehard Editions)

Karen Leeder

Karen Leeder
Karen is fascinated by the attraction of ‘lateness’ to German poets, and discusses the idea of ‘epochal lateness’, poetry as a ‘late’ form, and the power of poetry written in late in life. Her album of lullaby collaborations is called Common Rest and is published by Test Centre. It was developed as part of a Wellcome Trust project.

Andy Miller

Andy Miller

Our ‘dangerous’ reader, writer and editor Andy Miller tries to convince Ian McMillan that to be late is to be literary. What would ‘Alice in Wonderland’ be without the White Rabbit? And can you ever read a book too late? Andy is the author of ‘The Year of Reading Dangerously’ ( Fourth Estate)
