Stories

City Farmers - Part One

Josie d'Arby joins a group of inner city girls from London as they are given a taste of rural life at Shallowford farm in Dartmoor. The farm follows the Christian vision of Elizabeth Braund and Rosemary Bird who set up this project some forty years ago as a 'lung for the city', a chance for young people to breathe in the country air, experience the joys and challenges of caring for animals, and ultimately connect with God.
We also find out about the work o the Providence House in London, also founded by Elizabeth Braund as a safe haven for urban kids, and where the girls often spend their time.

Southwark Cathedral Bells

Church bells can signify births, deaths the happiness of a wedding day or be a simple call to service. But at Southwark Cathedral - the oldest cathedral church building in London - the ancient bells have ceased to ring over the last few months as the bells were in need of refurbishment. Fresh back from the Foundry, Kate Bottley sees the bells being returned to their rightful home back in the bell tower where we hear them ring again.

Mosque Visit

Christian worship has been fundamental to the market town of Bridgwater throughout the centuries and in 1722 the Quaker meeting house was built. But now, almost 300 years later, the building remains a place of worship... as the town's only mosque! As part of their religious education, the teachers at the local C of E school have arranged a visit to the mosque to learn about Islam.

City Farmers - Part Two

The girls from Providence House in London get stuck in to farm life, feeding and weighing the pigs, grooming a pony and learning about the livestock. We also hear from staff and volunteers about the ethos of the farm and the difference it makes to the city visitors.
