Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Ruth Scott Anglican Priest and Quaker:

One day, a Franciscan monk friend wasn鈥檛 paying attention to the road and cut up a police car on a roundabout. He stopped and as he wound down his window, the ashen-faced policeman looking in said, 鈥淵ou put the fear of God into me!鈥 The brother pulled down his polo-neck to reveal his dog collar. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 my job,鈥 he said鈥

Now, I hope I鈥檝e never put the fear of God into anyone but I certainly unsettled a group I worked with recently. They are leaders of a country working its way out of violent conflict.听 As with any group where participants may once have been enemies, we began by setting up a working agreement. This helps to create as safe and helpful a space as possible. As part of it the group agreed to arrive on time so others weren鈥檛 kept waiting, and to have their phones switched off in sessions. Some had two or three phones with them and although they accepted the working agreement, they were rather surprised when I stopped sessions if I noticed they were checking their phones. Neither did they expect me to come searching for them if they were late. As the week went on, I saw the look of panic if they saw me coming towards them, even when it was free time! These seemingly small things are really important when you鈥檙e trying to build trust and enable respectful encounters between enemies. But they matter on an everyday basis as well.听

Only a couple of days ago I was reading about the Middlesbrough Primary School where there were notices at the gates asking parents and carers to 鈥楪reet your child with a smile, not a mobile鈥. That made my heart ache. One of the things I love about the gospels is the complete attention Jesus gave to people deemed unworthy by others. He enabled them to feel heard and valued, and many of them found that healing. My group teased me about keeping them to their agreement, but I think they also learnt the truth of French philosopher, Simone Weil鈥檚 words when she wrote, 鈥淎ttention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.鈥
