Episode 3

Aled Jones presents a series exploring generosity. Can an RAF pilot who flew fast jets against the odds help an army man who's suffered a disabling injury?

Aled meets Trevor Edwards, a man who flew fast jets in the RAF against all the odds. He grew up on the deprived Thamesmead estate in the 70s. With a passion for aviation, Trevor thought becoming a pilot was beyond his reach and only for 'tall, Caucasian, publicly school educated, hyper intelligent' men. Trevor did well at school, and won a place at university where he came across the RAF. He failed a key test to become a pilot but was offered a place as a ground officer in the Air Force. On a training exercise tragedy struck. Trevor had to have his toes amputated after contracting trench foot. Whilst learning to walk again at the rehab centre Headley Court, believing his military career was over, Trevor met a Wing Commander (whose name he can't remember) who inspired him to try again to become a pilot. This conversation 30 years ago changed Trevor's life. Aled and the team have tracked the Wing Commander down and reunites Trevor with him. After this incredible surprise Aled then takes Trevor up in a plane to RAF Cosford where he reunites him with the aircraft that meant so much to Trevor, the Jaguar jet.

This journey motivates Trevor to want to help someone else, someone who has also suffered a disabling accident and who is facing military discharge. He is introduced to Paul Stevens, a soldier in the army who shattered his pelvis on a training exercise. Trevor learns Paul is passionate about flying and has had a couple of lessons funded by a charity. Throughout the meeting Paul thinks he is just taking part in a programme about life after the army, he has no idea he could be in line for a life changing gift which Trevor presents him with at the end of the programme.
