Glastonbury 鈥� Pause for Thought 鈥� Friday 23 June

听

This year Glastonbury is rejoicing in a heat wave.听 But it is not always like that.听 Last year the weather was so bad that the smell of wet mud seemed to follow me around for days after I got home. 听My wellies have never been the same since.听 One of the great things about coming to the Glastonbury Festival however is that there is always something here to surprise you. 听You might meet up with an an old friend you haven鈥檛 seen for years or meet someone for the first time, who will become a friend for life.听 It might be discovering a new band or a new sound.听听 It might be experiencing a new taste or even a new smell.听 Glastonbury never fails to surprise and delight all who come here.


Two years ago the Dalai Lama visited Glastonbury and addressed a huge crowd. 听He then made a surprise appearance on the Pyramid stage where he received a warm welcome and a birthday cake to celebrate his 80th birthday.听听 His words speak to people of all ages and across all cultures.听 He once said something that has stuck with me. He said: 鈥楤e kind whenever possible. It is always possible鈥�. 听Kindness is difficult to define.听 It is not always easy to say what we mean by 鈥榢indness鈥�, but we know it when we meet it. Kindness is always possible.听 Kindness is something we all need to give and to receive. 听Because when kindness fails the world becomes dark and life becomes bitter. 听


Recent events in Manchester and London have reminded us of that.听


However in the midst of darkness and despair, peace and hope are often to be found.听 There is real hope in knowing the presence of God walking alongside us and watching over us - A presence that many of us find in the person of Jesus Christ.


The Dalai Lama said however that: 鈥榃hether one believes in a religion or not 鈥� there isn't anyone who doesn't appreciate kindness and compassion鈥�. 听Kindness is always possible.听 The Glastonbury Festival is about music, but it is about much more than that.


Bono once said鈥� Music can change the world because it can change people鈥�.


And that is what the world needs 鈥� people who can and will change the world through their kindness and love for one another.听
