Pause For Thought
Reverend Richard Coles听
I gave a speech
at a conference in Northampton recently, for a music and performing arts trust.
It鈥檚 a brilliant organisation, ensuring young people have access to tuition,
instruments, and as many opportunities as possible to make music.听 I've supported it for years, and gladly
accepted the invitation to become one of its ambassadors.
When I arrived on the day, I was told I would be speaking in the Richard Coles
Hall. How flattering I thought, that they鈥檇 named it after me, and how suitable
not only for an ambassador but also because I started out as a young musician
in Northamptonshire myself. I affected a humble demeanour and composed some
gracious words of thanks.
It was a different Richard Coles. A consultant dermatologist from the General
Hospital, I discovered as I blushed, a keen amateur musician, and a dedicated
supporter. 鈥淪till,鈥 his daughter remarked, 鈥渨e could always put an apostrophe
after the S so it could be for BOTH of you鈥.
But credit where credit鈥檚 due, to my namesake, who worked so hard to get young
people in our county actively involved in music. Because I expect it will do
for them what it did for me, and I dare say for Steve and Rita and Vince here
this morning; to open up new imaginative horizons, and bring incalculable
enrichment and enjoyment to life. That鈥檚 what music does. But fewer young
people are able to do that now, because music is disappearing from the school
curriculum. In more and more of them core subjects, like literacy and numeracy and
science and computer technology, are considered more important than playing Sur
Le Pont d鈥橝vignon on shrill plastic recorders.
I'm not sure they鈥檙e right. St Irenaeus, one of my favourite saints of the
early church, whose feast fell this week, said that the glory of God is
humanity truly alive. That means not just literate and numerate, but on song,
and in tune, in tempo, and in the groove, resonant, in rejoicing and
lamentation. When we do that, and get it right, I think we most compellingly
anticipate the life of heaven in our lives on earth.
