Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:聽聽聽聽聽聽聽

Last Saturday, I popped down the road to get my newspaper and was looking forward to reading it with a nice cup of coffee to hand. We鈥檝e just moved and I haven鈥檛 yet learned how to open our front door. So there I was, turning the key this way and that, getting red in the face and getting nowhere. I鈥檓 sure some of those passing by in the street thought I was a burglar. It was a truly humiliating experience. In the end I had to shout through the letter box and Margaret came to relieve me of my distress.

And so I sat down with my paper feeling a bit fed up with myself but, within minutes, chanced on a truly uplifting story. The people of a tiny Welsh village, Narbeth in Pembrokeshire, have found a way to offer a home to a family of seven from war-torn Syria. They鈥檝e worked hard, raised the money, welcomed this family into their community. The plight of these poor people had worked its way into their minds and, while others huffed and puffed, they pulled off this wondrous act of love and human solidarity. 鈥淚t feels great,鈥 said one of the organisers, 鈥渢hey know they鈥檙e wanted. How satisfying is that?鈥

I was worried about getting into my house. Refugees have no houses to get into. Nor do they seem to get past the defences of the outside world 鈥 the doors of people鈥檚 hearts sometimes seem implacably locked against them. Our homes are our castles it鈥檚 said and so they are. I believe that we should see to it that we let the drawbridge down from time to time to let others in. 鈥淏ehold I stand at the door and knock,鈥 Jesus once said (he might have been a refugee himself), 鈥渋f anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I鈥檒l come in and we can enjoy a meal together.鈥 Narbeth in Pembrokeshire has spoken. They opened their door and I just feel they鈥檙e going to be blessed because of that. I鈥檇 like to think that where Narbeth leads others will now follow.
