Tree of the Year

The Armada Tree at St Patrick鈥檚 Church in Cairncastle has been short-listed as one of the contenders by the Woodland Trust. Legend has it when the Spanish Armada was passing these shores in 1588 a soldier was washed up at Ballygally. He was buried in the graveyard and after some time a sapling emerged from his grave. It鈥檚 believed it grew from a chestnut seed that was in the sailor鈥檚 pocket.聽
