Rented Accommodation Rights And Monarch Airline Collapse
Everyone has rights when renting accommodation, from the tenant to the landlord to the letting agent..but what are they? Plus, the collapse of Monarch Airline - what can we learn?
Everyone has rights when renting accommodation, everyone has responsibilities and that goes for the tenants, the landlords to the letting agents....but what are they? Jim Frazer of Trading Standards is live in studio. We hear from medical student Patrick who was owed 拢600 in standing order fees from his landlord, and a young couple who moved in to find the shower didn't work, the toilet didn't flush, the sofa held together by a plank of wood and a cooker that blew sparks and blew the main fuse. Ursula Toner of Housing Rights is in studio to discuss what students should do to protect their rights when renting. And why are tenants in England and Wales better protected than we are? Plus - Ursula discusses how homeowners should be aware that they may qualify for help towards mortgage interest payments.
Airline problems have become a regular for On Your Behalf in recent times - as the Ryanair crisis rumbles on...this week it's Monarch. The biggest UK airline ever has ceased trading and has gone into administration, leaving 110,000 holidaymakers abroad and 750,000 people with flights they've paid for, but will not be able to take. While Monarch didn't fly out of Northern Ireland, it's an important lesson for people booking independently, because some customers will buy protected, while others will not.The administrators KPMG say the vast majority of people should get their money back "in one way or another" - Gerry Hyland of the Belfast Consumer Advice Centre explains to On Your Behalf what is one way...and what is the other.
