NI abortion law under scrutiny by Supreme Court in London as appeal by NI Human Rights Commission begins

NI abortion law under scrutiny by Supreme Court in London as appeal by NI Human Rights Commission begins.

The Supreme Court in London is to begin hearing an appeal which argues that abortion law in Northern Ireland is incompatible with international human rights. The case brought by the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission will consider whether the law breaches women's rights by not allowing abortions in cases of sexual crime and fatal foetal abnormalities. Meanwhile, yesterday it was announced that a government offer to help Northern Ireland women access free abortions in England is being extended to cover travel costs in some "hardship" cases. Stephen was joined by Grainne Teggart from Amnesty International, Bernie Smyth from Precious Life and Les Allamby, chief commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission.

Also on the programme, more questions about former Sinn Fein MLA Catriona Ruane this morning. Last week Ms Ruane resigned from her role as deputy speaker of the Assembly. The former education minister did not stand in the March Assembly election. However, she retained her role as principal deputy speaker, which pays a salary of 拢55,000, even though the Assembly has not been sitting since January. Last Thursday evening, Ms Ruane said she had resigned "with immediate effect" as principal deputy speaker and that she had given any money paid to charity. The TUV leader Jim Allister says he submitted questions to the Assembly in an attempt to get more information about what has gone on. Stephen spoke to him this morning and got reaction from former assistant chief constable Alan McQuillan who sat on the independent review panel who set MLA pay.
