Heisgeir/The Monachs

Episode 4 of 19

S霉il air an dl霉th cheangal eadar Heisgeir agus muinntir eilean Ghriomasaigh. A look at the special connection between the Monach Isles and Grimisay, and those who live there.

Tha dl霉th dh脿imh air a bhith aig muinntir eilean Ghriomasaigh ann an Uibhist a Tuath ri Heisgeir, buidheann bheag de dh'eileanan torrach ann am meadhan cuain a tha a cheart cho torrach, c貌ig m矛le gun iar air Uibhist a Tuath - gu s貌nraichte tro iasgach. Tha eachdraidh inntinneach nan l霉ib, agus ged nach robh duine a' fuireach ann bho na tricheadan, 's e ceangal maireannach a th'ann chun an l脿 an-diugh.

Tha Hamish Mac an T脿illeir 脿s na Hearadh, a bha na iasgair na 貌ige agus a thadhal gu tric air Heisgeir, a' gabhail cuairt dha na h-eileanan s貌nraichte seo le cuid aig a bheil dl霉th cheangal dha na h-eileanan, nam measg P脿druig Moireasdan. Bha planaichean inntinneach, adhartach aig a sheanair fuireach agus bith-be貌 a dh猫anamh ann an Heisgeir as 霉r sna ceathradan. Coinnichidh Hamish cuideachd ri Aonghas D貌mhnallach a rugadh air Heisgeir, agus beachdaichidh e air d猫 tha fa-near dhan 脿ite iongantach seo a-nise.

There is a very special bond between Grimisay in North Uist and the Monach Isles, a group of fertile machair islands surrounded by an equally bounteous sea, five miles west of North Uist - particularly through fishing. They have a fascinating history, and although they've been uninhabited since the 1930s, it's a connection that continues to this day.

Hamish Taylor from Harris, who fished in his younger days and who visited Heisger often, goes to these unique islands, accompanied by others who have strong ties with the islands, among them P脿druig Morrison. His grandfather had big plans to resettle Heisgeir and make a living there in the 1940s.

Hamish also meets Angus MacDonald who was born in Heisgeir, and he'll also explore what the future holds for this extraordinary place.
