Pause For Thought
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:
听
The
Royal Wedding on Saturday was a global event watched by millions. Yet it was
also the personal coming together of two people brought together by love.
听And it is Bishop Michael Curry鈥檚 sermon on the power of love, which stood
out for me:
鈥淚magine our homes and families where love is the way.
Imagine our neighbourhoods and communities where love is the way.
Imagine our governments and nations where love is the way.
Imagine business and commerce where this love is the way.
Imagine this tired old world where love is the way.鈥
But what really is love?
Bishop Curry had a response, 鈥渦nselfish, sacrificial, redemptive.鈥
Somehow though, it can be hard for us to imagine such a world.
For sure, we may know unselfish and sacrificial individuals, but it can be
harder to imagine love on the scale Bishop Curry hopes for.
And yet, all the things he referenced: our homes and families, our
neighbourhoods and communities, our government and nations, our businesses and
commerce鈥 are all made up of individuals. They are made up of each of US.
I reckon that if each one of us can embrace love 鈥 then surely a collective of
individuals of whatever size and scale, can channel the power of Love, and
begin to build collectives of people powered by Love. What a force for good
that would be!
The Muslim poet Rumi said, 鈥淵esterday I was clever, so I wanted to change the
world. Today I am wise, so I am changing myself.鈥
And in changing ourselves, perhaps we can change the world鈥
听
Imagine a world where we truly demonstrated love.
Imagine loving the farmers who grow our food, or the factory workers who make
our products, by asking that the products we buy are ethical not just cheap.
Imagine a world, where our sense of love, means we demand that our societies
care for the weakest of us, rather than just serenading the most powerful and
strong.
I think our imaginations are often held captive by our experience of the world,
and sometimes it seems impossible to change it. But maybe if we allow love to
really grow within us - unselfish, sacrificial, redemptive love 鈥 maybe this
tired old world can shine anew.
