Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

It’s been 10 years since I graduated from vicar school, but there are some lessons you never forget, like how to hold the baby so you don’t drop it at the christening, how to fill in the marriage registers and just what to say when you’re offered a drink at a funeral visit.

Ìý

We were taught that whenever you’re visiting someone at such a difficult time it’s important to be sensitive, to put people at their ease in tricky circumstances and when the question comes ‘Would you like a drink vicar?’ the answer should always be ‘I’ll have whatever you’re having’ that way if they haven’t got the Fairtrade organic Columbian roast you usually drink at home no one needs to feel awkward and the visit isn’t anymore stressful than it already is.

Ìý

This strategy has only let me down once. A little while ago I went to see Maureen, whose lovely husband Trevor had just died. Our meeting was scheduled for just after lunch and when I arrived Maureen offered me a seat and a drink, remembering all I’d been taught, ‘I’ll have whatever your having’ came my reply. 5 minutes later Maureen walked back in with a tray and on it, 2 cherry Bakewells and 2 tumblers half full of single malt whiskey. Not quite what was expecting but it ended up being one of the best funeral visits I’ve ever had. We laughed and cried, remembered Trevor and put together a lovely service for him. As I left Maureen thanked me for my time and said she’d a surpisingly lovely afternoon. She wasn’t the only one, I had to get a taxi home.

Ìý

In the gospels there’s a bit where Jesus’s feet are anointed with a beautiful perfume as an act of generosity by one of his followers, and while the disciples mutter amongst themselves about the etiquette of such an encounter, Jesus lovingly receives the gift that’s offered, accepting the gift offered as a blessing and knowing that there’s more going on than meets the eye. That when something is graciously received it blesses not only the recipient but also the giver.

Ìý

Trevor had a lovely send off and at the party afterwards Maureen gave me a great big hug and then disappeared to the bar, she returned not two minutes later with a tray and I don’t think I need to tell you what there was on it, do I?
