Pause For Thought
Ruth Scott, Anglican Priest and Quaker:
After a recent stay in hospital I was delighted to be released home. Unfortunately a signature was missing from my discharge papers which meant I couldn鈥檛 leave immediately, but would have to hang around the ward for the rest of the day. It鈥檚 not the first time this has happened, but it was the first time I lost my cool about it. I was desperate to get home. I paced around my room like a caged lion, alternately tearful and angry. It felt a real disaster.
And then, a couple of hours later, I became suddenly and unexpectedly very ill. I ended up being kept in hospital for another three weeks of tests, surgery and treatment. What had seemed like an earth-shattering hold-up turned out to be a real blessing. When things went pear-shaped I was in exactly the right place. When momentous experiences and events take over our lives, it鈥檚 easy to get caught up on a rollercoaster of emotion, reacting to every twist and turn of fate, judging it for good or ill. The Old Testament story of Job captures this dynamic.
As Job lurches from one tragedy to the next, he and his unhelpful friends rock and roll from one kneejerk response to the next. Job鈥檚 story doesn鈥檛 end with an answer to the problem of suffering. Instead, it encourages the reader to step back and to try to take on board the bigger picture: Bad things may happen that turn out to be blessings, and good things may lose their shine in the light of unfolding developments.
Whether these experiences relate to personal challenges with life-threatening illness or tumultuous national and international times, the art is to step back and hold steady. As I recovered from the latest setbacks a friend sent me a 鈥楪et Well鈥 card of a lighthouse surrounded by crashing waves. Whatever the weather, calm or storm-tossed, this beacon of light remains the same, sending out a consistent beam in response to whatever is thrown at it. Personally and communally I think there鈥檚 much inspiration to be found in that image.
