Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Richard Coles:

Movie Week on Strictly tomorrow - hurrah - but it鈥檚 a bittersweet prospect for me, for last year my Paso Doble, danced to the theme tune from Flash Gordon, achieved the lowest score in Strictly history, and an early departure from the competition.

A week or two later, I was at the Pride of Britain awards doing twirls with fellow competitor Johnnie Peacock, when a lady approached.聽 鈥淚鈥檓 so sorry you were voted off early, bad luck,鈥 she said. It was the Prime Minister.

I was reminded of this on Wednesday, when I watched her make her entrance to Dancing Queen at the Conservative Party Conference; and thought, for a moment, that perhaps my footnote in history will be that I was the inspiration for this unforgettable spectacle. More scream queen than dancing queen, said some (although, Jamie Lee, that鈥檚 more properly your title).

Maybe it will be early doors for her too? Politics can be as unforgiving as Craig Revel Horwood, and like many I felt some sympathy for her, like I did when she busted her moves for those school children in South Africa (as if they hadn鈥檛 suffered enough), and got ridiculed for it by the media.

A brutal experience, but good medicine if you鈥檝e fallen for the myth of universal competence that so many in leadership are expected to show, as if they are superior beings endowed with magical powers, rather than flawed human beings seeking a way through.

I wonder if the inspiration was actually her father, a Church of England vicar, a vocation to leadership of a different kind, which requires you from time to time to make yourself ridiculous, wobbling on a skateboard to show you鈥檙e down with the kids, appearing in a terrible wig in the parish panto, or preaching a gospel of radical inclusion to an all but empty church.

There are worse things than looking ridiculous; being indifferent to the suffering of the poor, as the example of Jesus Christ insists, who also knew something about ridicule. Acclaimed as a king one day, mocked the next, he ended up on the cross - nul points. But that was the narrow judgement of this world, and Christians believe there is a world to come, where there are no wallflowers, and no judges, and no losers. Keeeep dancing.
