Brexit D-Day looms, TV drama from real life heartache, and prison sentences vs. community sentences
No Brexit is now more likely than leaving without a deal - that's the warning from the PM. Where next? Is she right - could Brexit be at risk? And is no-deal now off the table?
No Brexit is now more likely than leaving without a deal. That's the warning from the Prime Minister the day before her deal goes before parliament. Yesterday The Times reported a plot by MPs to allow Parliament to take control of Brexit out of the government's hands. So - where next? Is the PM right - could Brexit be at risk? And is no-deal now off the table? Vinny spoke to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú NI political correspondent Enda McClafferty and got the views of commentator Nelson McCausland and Phil Kelly from the Labour Party.
Also on the programme, is it insensitive to make TV dramas and movies - out of real life heartache? ITV's multi-part drama 'manhunt' follows the investigation into Levi Bellfield, a serial killer who murdered three young women in and around west London during the early Noughties. The programme has been criticised with one review labelling it as "an exploitative theme-park ride through one of the biggest tabloid stories of the millennium." Is it really ok to dramatise horrific events, for entertainment? Murder. Suffering. Real lives and real people? Vinny got the views of commentators Bumper Graham and Liz Kennedy.
And, the Ministry of Justice in England and Wales is considering banning jail sentence of less than 6 months. Ministers argue such sentences are less effective at tackling reoffending than community sentences. Prisons minister Rory Stewart told the Daily Telegraph that such sentences were "long enough to damage you and not long enough to heal you." In Scotland, a presumption against prison sentences of less than three months is already in place and is due to be extended to 12 months. But could the move be seen as being soft on crime? Vinny got the views of commentator Emma Woolf and Briege Gadd former Chief Probation Officer.
