Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:

Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish year – starts tomorrow evening.  The entire Jewish world comes to a standstill.  We don’t eat or drink for 25 hours, dress in white and come together to pray, sing and imagine ourselves as better people. We contemplate our personal and spiritual ambitions and work on repairing our fragmented relationships with loved ones, God, and, ultimately, ourselves.  And, the Bible assures us, this day brings with it the majesty of divine love, atonement and the chance to wipe our slate clean.

Yet despite the long fast, some pretty serious themes and many hours of prayers, Yom Kippur is the also the most joyful day of my year.  I can’t fully explain the mood as the sky darkens at the end of the day – it’s a delicious combination of jubilation, relief, confidence and personal freedom.  For me, optimism for the future combines with the sense that I am no longer confined by my past errors to create an ecstatic moment that defies description.

But you may be wondering what happens after that moment when the fast ends and whether it’s possible to maintain the high.  Once we are home from the synagogue, usually about 20 minutes after dark, I am usually so elated that I find it easier to sing and dance with whoever’s there – or on my own if no-one wants to play – than eat!  The euphoria continues through the post-fast meal, which is also a birthday party for my youngest daughter, who was born on Yom Kippur 17 years ago.  Eventually, I do eat, speak to my parents to see how they are after Yom Kippur and share a whisky or two with my guests.

But as I start to come down from the ceiling, I worry that the moment may be lost.  So, in accordance with ancient rabbinic teaching, I work for a few minutes on constructing the temporary home in which we will celebrate next week’s festival of Sukkot.  It may be just a nail in the wall or a screw in the floor, but it has a remarkable impact, as it allows me to channel a moment of joy into something concrete before it ebbs away.  Sometimes, the smallest act can help to preserve the profoundest experience.
