Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:Ìý

The story of the Gunpowder Plot is fascinating.Ìý A group of English Catholics plotted to blow up the House of Lords on 5th November 1605, during King James’ state opening of parliament.ÌýBut the plot was discovered and Guy Fawkes was found guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder, enough to reduce parliament to rubble.ÌýThe rest is history.

Much as I love fireworks, I can’t come up with any kind of Jewish angle on the story. I guess this is because the Gunpowder Plot happened 50 years before Oliver Cromwell allowed Jews to resettle in England.Ìý

Today is also the anniversary of the death of one of the extraordinary rabbis of recent centuries – Rabbi Meir Shapiro.ÌýHe lived in pre-Holocaust Lublin, in Poland, where he founded a revolutionary yeshivah-college in 1930. Shapiro was also the first Orthodox Jewish member of the second Polish Republic’s parliament.Ìý When he died of typhus in 1933 aged 46, it made front-page news across Poland.Ìý

But Rabbi Shapiro’s greatest legacy is neither his beautiful, huge yeshivah, nor his contribution to the Polish parliament.Ìý It’s a simple idea, which is very close to my heart – called Daf Yomi: one page a day.Ìý He proposed a Talmud-study programme in which every student in the world would learn the same double-page of text each day.Ìý

The Talmud is the ancient, authoritative repository of the wisdom, law, character development and ethics which define Judaism. Shapiro imagined a Talmud student attending a class in Poland, then continuing studying a page a day while travelling for weeks to the USA and on arrival, would find a class teaching exactly the same page.

The Talmud is gigantic – it takes almost seven and a half years to complete the cycle.Ìý But with each cycle, the numbers of students grows.ÌýThere are now hundreds of thousands – of which I am one – worldwide.ÌýThe siyyum – completion ceremony – is an astonishing experience.ÌýAnd having kept up with the programme for more than 22 years, I’m about to attend my third, which will be in about eight weeks.

It’s hard to express the gratitude I feel to Rabbi Shapiro for his brilliant yet simple project.ÌýNo fireworks, but a concept that has transformed lives and communities.ÌýI often wonder if each of has within us a simple idea that could change the world.
