Italy was the European country hit first and hardest by the spread of Covid-19 from China. In February an outbreak took hold in the north of the country - two months later the nationwide death toll stands at around 25,000. Italy’s healthcare system has been stretched to its limit; and now the economic and social consequences threaten to blight Italy for years. Stephen Sackur speaks to Italy’s Minister for European Affairs Vincenzo Amendola. Are the country’s leaders capable of meeting this once in a lifetime challenge?
