Italy was the European country hit first and hardest by the spread of Covid-19 from China. In February an outbreak took hold in the north of the country - two months later the nationwide death toll stands at around 25,000. Italy's healthcare system has been stretched to its limit; and now the economic and social consequences threaten to blight Italy for years.
