Children in Need Special 2020 - Caswell Bay
In Caswell Bay, Swansea, the team transform a dilapidated, disused bus shelter into the world's first purpose-built, fully adaptive surf centre.
Prepare for spadefuls of community spirit, bucket loads of tear-jerking moments and the chance to witness Nick Knowles in a wet suit. It鈥檚 surf鈥檚 up when DIY SOS descends on Caswell Bay, South Wales, to build a stunning surf centre for the 麻豆官网首页入口 Children in Need funded charity, Surfability - the country鈥檚 first fully-inclusive surf school, who teach disabled children and young people the joy of surfing.
While the DIY team and hundreds of local trades and volunteers build a state of the art surf centre, Nick and designer Gaby meet disabled youngsters, whose lives have been profoundly affected by lockdown restrictions, who get to experience the unadulterated joy of surfing for the first time.
Surfability was founded by Ben 6 years ago; he was determined to shatter the assumption that disabled people can鈥檛 surf, and has gone to extraordinary lengths to prove it. Ben and his dedicated team help over 500 people a year and are world-leaders in adaptive surfing, working with the International Surfing Association to develop standards for the sport.
Currently Surfability operates out of a dilapidated and disused bus shelter which lacks electricity, running water and it frequently floods. It鈥檚 unfit for purpose and so together with the wonderful volunteers and companies of South Wales, the DIY SOS team build a brand new surf centre, ensuring that Surfability can continue to help disabled people from across the country feel the freedom and unadulterated joy of Surfing.
