Episode 8

Jay Blades and the team take on a one-of-a-kind bicycle sidecar, a Victorian sewing table, a military drum and an art deco clock with a mischievous past.

Jay Blades and the team bring four treasured family heirlooms, and the memories they hold, back to life.

There’s a treat in store for metalworker Dominic Chinea when he comes up against a one-of-a-kind bicycle sidecar designed for junior passengers. Owners Chrissy and Steve have many fond memories of peddling around town, with all three of their children having been in the sidecar at some point in their lives. Now grandparents, they would like to use it again with their children’s children, but after spending decades exiled to the shed this ingenious contraption is looking very sorry for itself.

Furniture restorer Will Kirk is presented with the dreaded 'box of bits' when he meets the owner of what was once a Victorian sewing table. Claire’s treasured heirloom originally belonged to her great-grandmother and is her pride and joy. However, a falling painting crushed the fragile papier-mache table, and Claire fears it is beyond repair. Will sets out to prove her wrong, painstakingly piecing together this fragile 3D jigsaw.

Percussion expert Pete Woods takes receipt of a piece of military history – a drum that has seen front-line action in both the first and second world wars. The drum belonged to owner Tim’s grandfather, who signed up for duty in the Royal Fusiliers at just 13 years of age - too young to be a soldier, but old enough to be a drummer boy and accompany marching soldiers into battle.

Clare Collier from Cambridge brings in a sweet reminder of her childhood for the attention of clock restorer Steve Fletcher. The art deco chiming clock belonged to her great-grandmother. The mischievous old lady would secretly leave sweets on the clock for a young Clare and her sister at bedtime when they stayed over. The clock has been silent for over 25 years, and the wooden casing is dull and dirty. Steve gives the mechanism a good soak and scrub up, then carefully reassembles all the workings getting it ticking and chiming once again.
