A beloved gramophone, which reminds the owner of her music-loving grandad, and a old slide projector belonging to a photography enthusiast are among today’s transformations.

Sabrina Grant presents as a team of expert crafters transform unused objects into contemporary and functional items.

Michelle and Carl have brought a stunning 1930s gramophone to the workshop. It belonged to Michelle’s grandad, who loved reggae and the music of the Rat Pack. He had a collection of nearly 20 gramophones, but this one was always Michelle’s favourite, and it’s her connection to her grandad. It isn’t used anymore, so she would love it to be transformed into something functional. Metalsmith John and woodwork specialist Daisy offer two very different transformations for the couple to choose from.

Kate brings an old slide projector into the workshop, evidence of her obsession with photographic equipment. She bought it for £2 at a car boot sale and has loved it ever since. But now it is just sitting unused by her fireplace. Shelley’s first love might be wood, but the carpentry expert’s skills are wide ranging. She has an idea that will beautifully complement the projector’s metal body.

An intriguing item gives interior design craftsman Rob a challenge. It’s an old steamship lamp – one of a pair that would have signalled the port and starboard sides of the vessel. It was given to Denni by her father when she was very young and holds special memories. Rob has a plan that will have the lamp centre stage but transformed into a completely different object.

And seamstress Elizabeth finds a playful way to transform a shearling lambskin coat. Katy inherited it when her mum died and would love it to become something that her grandchildren would enjoy. Elizabeth’s clever design transforms the coat into an object with lots of character – and Katy is delighted.
