Episode Two
Bettany Hughes explores how Gibraltar's location at the western edge of the Mediterranean gave it a front-row seat in world history.
Gibraltar's location at the western edge of the Mediterranean gave it a front-row seat in world history, as the 'Trafalgar Scoop' reported: the first article on the British Royal Navy's historic victory at the Battle of Trafalgar fought just off the coast. In the Second World War, Gibraltar's importance meant a 50km maze of tunnels was constructed under the Rock.
With exclusive access to the 'Stay Behind Cave', Bettany explores the story of a secret tunnel system constructed in the event of a German invasion, where British spies would literally 'stay behind' - and finds evidence that there may well be more Stay Behind Caves yet to be discovered. Small wonder that these secret underground lairs inspired one naval intelligence officer stationed in Gibraltar during World War II; his name was Ian Fleming, the future creator of James Bond.
Bettany's final wonder is the Rock itself and the awe-inspiring ecology supported by this immense, 400m limestone monolith. It is a sanctuary for marine life, contains spectacular caves and, of course, is also the home to Europe's only wild monkey population.
