Yvonne and Julian help raise awareness for Mental Health Awareness Week and celebrate Troy Kotsur鈥檚 win. They also meet a professional deaf ballroom dancer and a spiritual life coach.
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week, which takes place this year on 9-15 May, Richard France speaks to Herbert Klein and Dr Sophie Roberts to find out why low mental health and loneliness is higher in deaf people compared to their hearing peers, why deaf people struggle to speak up, and what support is out there.
We also hear from John Smith about his own personal journey with his mental health, and there is an interview with the chief executive of SignHealth, James Watson-O鈥橬eill. James discusses the importance of the new SignHealth contract with the NHS, what it means, and how impactful this contract will be for the deaf community.
Yvonne and Julian meet Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur to discuss his latest win as Best Supporting Actor in CODA, which also won the Best Picture award, the making of CODA, and the impact the film has on the mainstream audience.
We meet Mervyn Frost, a professional ballroom dancer who started at the age of 12 and has been working as a ballroom dance teacher for over 40 years. Mervyn talks about his years of dancing in films, and we鈥檙e invited to a local dance class he is teaching to find out how he adapts his teaching methods for deaf individuals learning to dance.
And Kori takes us into the world of spirituality, showing how it can help with mental health and mindfulness. We also find out how meditation and readings can be adapted and made accessible for deaf people wanting to delve deeper into spirituality.
