Getting off the drink and drugs. Jeremy Cooke spends a year following Mike as he rebuilds his life in a town that is trialling a new way to treat addiction.

At a time when deaths from drugs and alcohol are at an all-time high, we go to Birkenhead, a town which is fighting back with a new approach. The biggest investment in recovery services for a generation is just arriving in councils across England. Does this area of the north west have the solution to treating addiction as a chronic illness?
