Celebrating Charles Stepney
Jamie Cullum salutes the man behind classics by Minnie Riperton, Ramsey Lewis, The Rotary Connection and many more - as the first album bearing his own name is released.
Jamie celebrates the work of musician, composer and arranger Charles Stepney - the man behind classics by Minnie Riperton, Ramsey Lewis, Marlena Shaw, The Rotary Connection, Earth, Wind and Fire and many more!
45 years after his passing, the first album under Charles Stepney's own name is due to be released. Comprising some of the many demos he left behind, these were recorded at his home in Chicago and have been treasured by his daughters for many years, before they decided that the world should hear them.
Bass player and musical director of tribute project Rotary Connection 222, Junius Paul, joins Jamie to talk about Charles Stepney's legacy and falling in love with the music - plus his aim to get the musician the recognition he deserves after all this time. One of his daughters, Eibur Stepney, also features to share memories of her father.
On top of all that - there's music from Oscar Brown, Jr, Ezra Collective and Yussef Dayes. Plus, Jamie pays tribute to legendary record producer Creed Taylor and the brilliant trumpeter Jaimie Branch.
