Ariel Kalma, Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer in session

Jennifer Lucy Allan shares the fruits of our latest long-distance collaboration, between composer Ariel Kalma in Australia and artists Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer in LA.

Jennifer Lucy Allan shares the fruits of our latest long-distance collaboration session, between French composer Ariel Kalma in Australia and artists Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer in Los Angeles. The idea behind the Late Junction session is to invite artists working in different sound worlds to come together, in real life or across the internet, to create something entirely new and improvised - like a musical blind date.

Ariel Kalma is a composer, multi-instrumentalist and self-described musician of the world, currently based in Byron Bay in Australia. Mixing acoustic instruments with electronics, his work draws elements and rhythms from different traditions and genres to create his wide-ranging experimental compositions. In France during the mid-1970s, he worked as a technician at Pierre Henry’s legendary musique concrete studios, before touring the world in various bands and musical guises. Over the last four decades, his output has been prolific, with his work being used for everything from modern dance-theatre and films to guided meditations.

Jeremiah Chiu and Marta Sofia Honer are a Los Angeles-based duo who have collaborated and cohabited for years, originally having met as members of a large ensemble performing Terry Riley’s “In C” in Chicago’s experimental music scene. Honer is a celebrated viola and violin player in LA, frequently working as a session artist including on several Grammy-nominated albums. Chiu is an artist, educator and electronic composer with an interest in modular synthesizers and sound art. Together they released their debut album Recordings from the ?land Islands this year, which fuses field recordings made on a trip to the Swedish archipelago with organ, piano, viola, synthesizers and more.
