From Carol Channing to Franz Liszt.

Award-winning film actor and writer Sir Dirk Bogarde shares his castaway choices with Roy Plomley.

In the first of what were to become two appearances (the second was in 1989) Bogarde doesn鈥檛 think he could cope with the solitude and silence of being castaway.

The actor is a big fan of music and complains eight choices aren鈥檛 enough.

He made his London West End theatre-acting debut in 1939, after which he served in the British Army during the Second World War.

His film contract with the Rank Organisation in 1948 was the spark for his very successful career. Big screen highlights included: The Blue Lamp, The Servant and the Doctor films based on Richard Gordon鈥檚 novels.

In 1977 he embarked on a second career of several best-selling novels.

Bogarde was created a Knight Bachelor in 1992.

Born in 1921, he died aged 78 in 1999.
