Harpist Rachel Masters with music that touches the soul

Harpist Rachel Masters reveals familiar and unfamiliar works in a new light, from beautiful brass melodies to orchestral delights.

Rachel Masters is the principal harpist in the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and today on Inside Music she reveals her passion for good orchestration - from Tchaikovsky鈥檚 ability to transform the simplest melody into something magnificent, to Henri Dutilleux鈥檚 capacity to make every single note matter.

Rachel also revels in the dreamy brass sounds of Toru Takemitsu鈥檚 Night Signal, is transported to another world by John Williams, and finds herself feeling jealous that she can鈥檛 transfer the smooth chord progressions of the guitar onto the harp.

Plus, a brief history of the harp: from an instrument stretching back centuries, to the concert harp that Rachel plays every day鈥

A series in which each week a musician explores a selection of music - from the inside.
