'Were you ever lifted?'
Thomasina says she isn't sure whether she was ever lifted or not.
"I remember an expression," says Sean, "that the girls used to use in Derry, and I'm going to run it by the younger members of the team."
Sean turns to young Janet and young Thomasina, on the other side of the glass, and turns to Janet first: "Were you ever lifted at a dance?"
Janet says yes.
"Over to you now Thomasina," Sean says. "Now don't worry. I know your mother's listening. You can talk about this. It's nothing to worry about. Were you ever lifted?"
Thomasina isn't sure whether she was ever lifted or not.
"I think you were," Sean says. "What it means is a fella asks a girl for a dance. I would hear my sisters and the girls saying things like, 'Oh, I hope so and so lifts me,' or 'so and so lifted me last night'. But mostly they'd be complaining. 'Do you know who lifted me last night? You know oul ... Dirty oul brute!'"
