Britpop Forever: 1993

Steve Lamacq looks back at what were the beginnings of Britpop in 1993 including Suede releasing their debut album & the 'Yanks Go Home' Select magazine cover.

Steve Lamacq celebrates 30 years of Britpop by chronicling the events and moments of the movement during its formative years.

The 30th anniversary of Britpop gives us the unique opportunity to tell some of the greatest stories in pop history during such a pivotal moment in British culture. Britpop was the last hurrah for the music industry before it was changed forever by the emergence of the internet. As co-host of Radio 1’s legendary Evening Session, Steve Lamacq was there, in the middle of all of it.

Today, we focus on 1993, which laid the foundation of what was to become Britpop. Steve takes a look into the musical events of the year – including Radiohead, who were touring in support of their debut album Pablo Honey, and Oasis, playing their infamous gig at the Glasgow King Tut’s Wah Wah Club that saw them sign to Creation Records.

We follow Suede, who released their debut album in 1993, performed at the Brit awards alongside Tasmin Archer, Simply Red and Rod Stewart, and were featured on the groundbreaking 'Yanks Go Home' Select magazine front cover.

We hear from Blur's Alex James, Sleeper's Louise Wener, Creation Record's Alan McGee and Brett Anderson and Mat Osman from Suede.

Then, in the final 30 minutes, Steve repeats Suede’s 1993 Glastonbury Festival performance, recorded on the 25th June 1993 on the NME Stage.
