An Litir Bheag 977
Bha D貌mhnall Alasdair MacCoinnich na sgr矛obhadair agus na bheul-aithrisiche. Sgr矛obh e gu le貌r air creideamh, miotas-e貌las agus antrop-e貌las. Tha mi a鈥 dol a thoirt s霉il air fear de na leabhraichean aige.
Fhad 始s as aithne dhomh, cha do thogadh D貌mhnall leis a鈥 Gh脿idhlig. Rugadh e ann an Cromba ann an Ros an Ear ann an ochd ceud deug, seachdad 始s a tr矛 (1873). Thog e sgilean mar neach-naidheachd ann an Glaschu. Bha e ag obair mar neach-naidheachd agus sgr矛obhadair air a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd agus Galltachd.
Bha 霉idh mh貌r aige ann am miotas-e貌las, no mythology. Am measg nan leabhraichean a sgr矛obh e, tha Egyptian Myth and Legend, Indian Fairy Stories, agus Myths from Melanesia and Indonesia.听
Cha robh obair agus a bheachdan gun chonnspaid. Anns an leabhar aige Wonder Tales from Scottish Myth and Legend, tha a h-uile c脿il ann am Beurla. Chan eil an t-霉ghdar a鈥 foillseachadh nan t霉san aige.听
Co-dhi霉, tha mi airson rudan a tharraing bhon chiad d脿 chaibideil anns an leabhar sin. Tha Caibideil 1 mu dheidhinn 鈥Beira, Queen of Winter鈥. Tha seo st猫idhichte air a鈥 Chaillich Bheur no Bheura, caractar l脿idir ann am beul-aithris nan G脿idheal. Seo mar a tha an cunntas aig MacCoinnich a鈥 t貌iseachadh: Dark Beira was the mother of all the gods and goddesses in Scotland... Each winter she reigned as Queen of the Four Red Divisions of the world...
Tha sin a鈥 sealltainn gu bheil an teacsa st猫idhichte air dualchas nan G脿idheal. Cha bhiodh 鈥the Four Red Divisions of the world鈥 a鈥 ciallachadh dad ann an saoghal na Beurla. Ach canaidh sinn sin fhathast ann an G脿idhlig 鈥 nuair a tha sinn a鈥 bruidhinn air an t-saoghal air fad 鈥 鈥榗eithir rannan ruadh an domhain鈥. Gu litreachail 鈥 鈥the four red divisions of the world鈥.
Cha robh aig a鈥 Chaillich ach aon s霉il. Bha a fiaclan ruadh mar a鈥 mheirg. Bha a falt cho geal ri canach an t-sl猫ibhe. Bha a h-aodach liath agus bha se脿la odhar thairis air a guailnean.听
Chaidh i air feadh na G脿idhealtachd. Thathar ag r脿dh gun do chruthaich i a h-uile beinn ann an Siorrachd Rois. Bidh tuilleadh agam oirre an-ath-sheachdain.

The Little Letter 977
Donald Alexander Mackenzie was a writer and folklorist. He wrote prolifically on religion, mythology and anthropology. I鈥檓 going to look at one of his books.
As far as I know, Donald wasn鈥檛 raised with Gaelic. He was born in Cromarty in Easter Ross in 1873. He picked up skills as a journalist in Glasgow. He was working as a journalist and writer in the Highlands and Lowlands.
He had a great interest in mythology. Among the books he wrote are Egyptian Myth and Legend, Indian Fairy Stories and Myths from Melanesia and Indonesia.听
His work and opinions were not without controversy. In his book Wonder Tales from Scottish Myth and Legend, everything is in English. The author doesn鈥檛 publish his sources.
Anyway, I want to draw things from the first two chapters in that book. Chapter 1 is about 鈥楤eira, Queen of Winter鈥. That is based on the Cailleach Bheur, an important character in the oral traditions of the Gael. Here鈥檚 how Mackenzie鈥檚 account commences: 鈥楧ark Beira was the mother of all the gods and goddesses in Scotland... Each winter she reigned as Queen of the Four Red Divisions of the world...鈥
That shows that the text is based on the heritage of the Gaels. 鈥楾he Four Red Divisions of the world鈥 would mean nothing in the world of the English speaker. But we still say in Gaelic 鈥 when we are talking about the entire world - 鈥 鈥ceithir rannan ruadh an domhain鈥. Literally 鈥 鈥榯he four red divisions of the world鈥.
The Cailleach had only one eye. Her teeth were as red as rust. Her hair was a white as the bog cotton. Her clothes were grey and there was a dun shawl over her shoulders.
She went throughout the Highlands. It鈥檚 said that she created every mountain in Ross-shire. I鈥檒l have more about her next week.
