Deeply in love and enlightened by Sanskrit literature, Gustav Holst embarked upon what many consider his true masterpiece. The Cloud Messenger recounts an ancient tale in which a man sends a message of love to his distant wife via a passing cloud. It drew from the composer a rich and passionate work charting love鈥檚 trials and rewards. This performance, marking 150 years since Holst鈥檚 birth, comes after Elgar鈥檚 ever-popular, bittersweet Cello Concerto - with soloist Senja Rummukainen making her Proms debut - and the gentle exhalations of Jonathan Harvey鈥檚 Tranquil Abiding, inspired by Buddhist meditation.
