State Of Independent Venues: In-Depth Artist Discussion

Huw continues our celebration of live music venues with a panel of Kate Nash, Oneda, Loose Articles and Los Campesinos discussing the issues around the live music industry.

Huw continues our week-long celebration of live music venues with a panel of artists discussing the issues around live music and the music industry as a whole.

Our guests are Kate Nash, who has been vocal on the financial difficulties of touring and hit the headlines in late 2024 when she launched an OnlyFans page to help fund her live show, called Butts 4 Tour Buses. Kate is an actor and musician who began her career in the mid-00s, breaking through with the help of MySpace and a support slot with Lily Allen. She released her fifth studio album 9 Sad Symphonies in 2024 and plays a homecoming show in April at London's Kentish Town Forum.

Huw is also joined by Gareth Paisey from Los Campesinos. Having been a band for almost twenty years they are now completely independent, having released their seventh studio album All Hell in July 2024 via their own label Heart Swells. Despite minimal spending on marketing the record the album became their first to chart in the UK top 40, reaching number 14. The band are set to play two London shows at The Troxy next month, called the Valentines 2 Night Stand, on 14th and 15th of February.

Also on the panel is Erin Caine from Manchester-based band Loose Articles. The band are about to go on tour with their Kick Like A Girl, Extra Time project which is aimed at supporting young female/non- binary people into live music across a range of areas, from performance to sound and technical roles. They are taking the tour to grassroots venues across the North that are often overlooked and participants can shadow the band and their crew to learn how the gig comes together. Locations for the tour include Preston, Atherton, Rochdale, Birkenhead and Morecambe.

Finally our fourth guest is Manchester rapper and poet Oneda. Oneda released her debut album Formula Oneda in October 2024 and is touring throughout February this year, including shows for Independent Venue Week. Oneda is also the founder of Herchester, a community of female and non-binary MCs.
