Island Farming on the Edge

Episode 7 of 12

Paul turns to the community for help with a ewe in distress. The loss of some land puts succession into focus for Nick, while Ben and Matt race to get the event site ready on time.

Nick and Derek get some bad news, putting plans for taking over the family farm into sharp focus in Dumfries and Galloway. They’re losing 300 acres of leased grazing land to forestry. With concerns over when dad Derek might retire, Nick sets out a timeline for his succession.

On Papa Westray, new farmers Paul and Mel are in the midst of their first big lambing season. With the addition of new baby Oak, it’s a family affair. Ten-year-old Jakey does the morning rounds checking for new lambs and spots a ewe in trouble. Paul has to call on his farming neighbours for help.

At Hillhead Farm near Glasgow, Ben and Matt Imrie are tackling the wedding and events site infrastructure. The race is on to make it a marketable venue ahead of the first event of the season in six weeks’ time. Their dad John has another pre-op for his hip replacement. He and Antoinette hope he’ll get the news he’s desperately waiting for.
