Bartleby the Scrivener by Herman Melville

Herman Melville's classic tale of a lawyer perplexed by the passive resistance of his new office clerk. Read by Alex Jennings.

'It was on the third day, I think, of his being with me, that I abruptly called to Bartleby to examine a small paper with me. Imagine my consternation, when Bartleby in a singularly mild, firm voice, replied, 鈥淚 would prefer not to.鈥'

Alex Jennings reads Herman Melville's classic tale of a lawyer's attempts to make sense of the perplexing defiance of his mild-mannered office clerk. Beloved of Kafka and Camus, and widely regarded as one of the greatest short stories ever written, Bartleby the Scrivener was first published in 1853.
