Chapter 4: Winter
It鈥檚 winter. As the Sperrins are covered in snow, then battered by Storm Darragh, work continues around the mountains to restore and protect this area of outstanding natural beauty.
As heavy snow falls, the Sperrins become a winter wonderland. At remote Butterlope Farm, despite the challenges brought by the cold weather, the team relish the snowy landscape.
For photographer Martin, snow is precious and tells a story, and he is on the hunt for different phenomenon that these Arctic conditions can produce.
As Christmas approaches, the snow lends an air of magic to Gortin Glen Forest Park, but the freezing cold does not deter Sean and his guide dog Bennie from their daily walk.
For some, the snowy landscape becomes a winter playground, and for adrenaline junkie and seasoned snowboarder Kieron, it鈥檚 an incredible spot to enjoy the day.
In the northern foothills of the Sperrins, set in a 17th century castle, is Gaelchol谩iste Dhoire, an Irish language post primary school. Hurling coach Cian is preparing the U15 school team for an important final.
Storm Darragh brings widespread chaos to the region, as the fierce winds ease, volunteers Sharon and Arnie are up at dawn to check on the damage done to Lissan House and Estate.
On the bog, Ulster Wildlife peatland officer Rory has invited the community to come and pick their own Christmas tree, encouraging sustainability and education about the restoration works being carried out on these vital peatlands.
Christmas celebrations are in full swing across the Sperrins, and for Butterlope Farm, it鈥檚 the chance for Annie and Vinnie to celebrate a successful and busy year for the social farmers.
As the year ends, the people of the Sperrins stay close to home and reflect, while in nature the cycle of the seasons begins again.
