In Sickness and in Debt
Zeinab Badawi travels to Athens, visiting hospitals and community clinics, to discover what impact the austerity measures in Greece are having on the nation's health.
All over Greece, austerity measures are taking their toll on the nation's health. Medical professionals say the crisis is already costing lives. Hospitals have seen cuts of up to 40 per cent and doctors report worrying shortages of staff and even basic medical supplies. With growing unemployment, many have lost their health-care insurance and must pay up front for their treatment. In this week's Our World, Zeinab Badawi travels to Athens visiting hospitals and community clinics. She meets patients who simply cannot afford the healthcare they need and who are now dependent on a growing number of voluntary community clinics and NGOs filling the gap left by the state.
