In the July edition of Talking Movies much of the focus will be on Africa. African cinema, or rather, cinema made by Africans, doesn't have much of a presence in the global film industry. Talking Movies will be looking at the efforts being made to give African films a higher international profile. The programme will hear from Abderrahmane Sissako, the director of Timbuktu, one recent African film that is generating an international following after being screened at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. To many, the founding father of African cinema is Ousmane Sembene who challenged the movies created by the West. Talking Movies will be looking at his legacy and how he still has an impact on filmmakers today. There is also a report on a how some Nollywood directors are trying to move away from the staple quick turnaround formula films to create better quality movies - and the programme will feature an interview on a new documentary focusing on the Nigerian musician and activist Fela Kuti.
