On a hot midsummer's day, when most reptiles head for the shade, the gopher tortoise is heading for the coolness of its burrow. David Attenborough follows one down its 70m burrow with a mini-camera and passes a rattle snake on the way. The tortoise doesn't seem to mind sharing its burrow as it's well protected by its shell. Over 100 species have been recorded down gopher tortoise burrows. Each tortoise may have more than one burrow in its territory, which helps it deal with an even greater danger than sunstroke: bush fires - a major and recurrent threat to all the animals that live here. Tortoise tunnels are invaluable places in which to take refuge.
