The 27th annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Harrogate International Centre.

After coming second for the previous two years Germany's efforts paid off and they won a decisive victory with Nicole singing "Ein Bisschen Frieden" (A little peace). The song secured writers Ralph Siegel and Bernd Meinunger a place in Eurovision history, having written 18 songs between them in all, 13 of which were for Germany. It was the seventh time the UK had hosted the event. The host country was represented by Bardo with "One Step Further".

France did not enter this contest and national broadcaster TF1 provoked an outcry when the head of entertainment publically ridiculed the competition. A different broadcaster took over the reins and returned France to the contest the following year.
