The thirty fifth annual Eurovision Song Contest broadcast from Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (now Croatia).Italy topped the leaderboard for the first time in more than two decades with Toto Cutugno and "Insieme: 1992".Several countries chose to address current political events in their lyrics with Norway and Austria both commenting on the fall of the Berlin wall, while the winner Toto sung about the imminent introduction of a single European market. There was also a new trend musically in the contest, with performances by Spain and France combining dance music with ethnic influences, a sound that was to prove popular into the next decade. This contest was the first to feature an official Eurovision mascot, called Eurocat. Also memorable was a slip up at the beginning of the first song when the introduction for the Spanish song did not start from the beginning making them miss their cue and leave the stage in annoyance. Fortunately it was soon resolved and they restarted the performance.
